We have a diverse team of dedicated engineers

Ultrasonic Sciences is a small, privately owned and UK registered company. Our staff are dedicated and experienced people with a wide range of skills and disciplines. Many of them have been with USL for more than 10 years.

We have mechanical designers, electrical and electronics designers, assembly engineers and technicians, software developers and service engineers.

One thing we do not have is a top heavy administration. We expect and encourage staff to be adaptable and multi-disciplinary, to the best of their ability.

See machines developed right through to installation

The environment at USL is very rare in that our staff see the development of a complete testing machine from its inception and design, through fabrication, assembly, commissioning, delivery and installation through to long term support. Bare metal and basic parts come in to the receiving bay (not that we have such a thing!) and a complete machine exits the factory for delivery to the end user.

Systems based on robotic mechanisms are one exception to this. If a robot-based system is applicable to a project and can be economically applied, then we use a standard “off-the-shelf” robot mechanism. Having said that the complete system integration is done by us. Also the robotic motion control is developed by USL, because the standard controllers are not suitable for high speed scanning.

Mechanical Design Engineer – Job Description

The principal activities are as follows:-

Machine design

In conjunction with our Head Design Engineer you will be required to design multi axis machines, often incorporating robots, so experience in the design of dynamic systems is required.

Proficiency in Solid Works with at least 5 years’ experience of design in a manufacturing environment and a working knowledge of how to perform engineering calculations is also required.

You must have a knowledge of European legislation with regard to machine design including the production of design risk assessments etc.

You will have experience of producing machine build documentation such as parts lists, assembly drawings etc.

Construction and installation of machines

As the design engineer you will be required to oversee the build of the machines so practical engineering experience will be necessary. Most of our larger machines require on-site installation work and as the design engineer you will often be required to supervise these installations. This activity will involve both domestic and international travel. Where on-site work is involved, the company will provide a suitable vehicle and cover related costs and reasonable expenses. Overtime will be paid.

The Person

You will be joining a small team who frequently have to work against tight time and cost deadlines.  You must be strongly self-motivated and be able to work quickly and accurately with minimal supervision.

The successful candidate will be a key member of our team so you must be able to get on with other people, especially under pressure.

Like many small companies, we do expect all our employees to be flexible over the work they do and to be prepared to help with other tasks from time to time if the need arises.

A full UK car driving license is required.

HND in Mechanical engineering or equivalent qualification.

Holidays are 22 days plus public holidays.

The normal working week is 37.5 hours per week, Monday-Friday at our industrial unit in Aldershot, Hampshire.

Mechanical Engineering Fitter – Job Description

The principal activities are as follows:-

Machine Building

This will be your major area of work, which will involve reading drawings & working from verbal instruction to understand the machine design and the purpose of component parts. Following this you would assist in building the system.

To carry out this work it essential that you have a solid background in mechanical fitting and are proficient in the use of hand and power tools. We also have a small workshop so the ability to use a manual lathe and/or milling machine to make modifications & repairs would be an advantage. Experience in the assembly of complex mechanical structures and machines would be an advantage. Assembly work may vary from precision to large scale so you should be competent enough to tackle both. We occasionally use a laser tracker to assist with accurate assembly so any experience with this would be beneficial.

On large machines, it can be necessary to work at height so it is essential that you are conversant with and give due respect to the many health and safety considerations. Training will be given where required.

Installation of Machines

Most of our larger machines require on-site installation work, which you will assist with.

This activity will involve travel both domestic and international which will result in some time working away from home. Generally this is a maximum of two weeks. Where on-site work is involved, the company will provide a suitable vehicle and cover related costs and reasonable expenses. Overtime will be paid.

Computer Skills

As a minimum you must be able to use Word, E-mail and web searches. The ability to use CAD programs to read drawings would be useful.

Formal qualifications would most likely be C&G or NVQ 3 equivalent in mechanical production engineering. A willingness to undertake additional training courses is required.
